Earnings Call Highlights: AXT (AXTI) | FY25 Q4

1. Summary | AXT Rides an InP Demand Surge, but Export Permits Bring "Growing Pains"

AXT's Q4 2025 results came in below expectations because of delays in export permits, yet management sent extremely strong operating signals. Driven by AI infrastructure and data center upgrades, indium phosphide (InP) substrate orders hit a record $60M+. Management is aggressively expanding capacity and expects to double it by the end of 2026. While near-term gross margin and profit are hostage to the pace of export controls, permits started coming through in Q1 2026, and the company expects revenue to return to sequential growth and head toward a profitability inflection, powered by the twin engines of AI optical communications and the China market.

2. Financials (Non-GAAP)

  • Revenue: $23.0M (QoQ -17.9%, YoY -8.4%)

  • Gross margin: 21.5% (QoQ -110 bps, YoY +350 bps)

  • Operating loss: $2.6M (widened from a $0.38M loss in Q3)

  • EPS: -$0.06 (Q3: -$0.02)

  • Opex: $7.8M (Q3 R&D had a one-time favorable adjustment, making for a low base)

  • Cash: $128.4M (mainly from the $93.9M public offering completed in December)

  • CapEx: Q4 depreciation and amortization of $2.3M

  • Revenue by segment:

    • Indium phosphide (InP): $8.0M (for AI data centers)

    • Gallium arsenide (GaAs): $7.0M (wireless RF, industrial and automotive VCSELs)

    • Germanium: $0.23M

    • Raw materials joint ventures: $7.6M

3. Outlook (Q1 2026)

  • Revenue guidance: high-certainty revenue of $26.0M (permits already granted or not required).

    • Note: if additional permits are issued in time, revenue has meaningful upside.

  • EPS guidance: -$0.02 to -$0.04 (non-GAAP)

  • Growth drivers: Q1 demand from the China data center market is expected to rise +60% QoQ, with InP substrates for AI as the core driver.

  • Opex guidance: roughly $9.0M.

4. Product Updates

Indium Phosphide (InP)

  • Technology: focuses on the advantage of low EPD (etch pit / dislocation density) wafers to serve high-speed optical modules (EML, silicon photonics). 6-inch InP is in development/ramp to meet next-generation AI demand.

  • Demand: Backlog above $60M. Beyond US hyperscalers, demand from China's Tier 1 data center operators has surged.

  • Capacity: up 25% since October, with capacity expected to double by the end of 2026.

Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)

  • Wireless RF: demand is steady; share gains are limited by how fast permits are obtained.

  • VCSEL: data center volumes are small, but demand from autonomous vehicles in China and precision vision for robotic hands is growing significantly. These applications use large die, so they contribute more to substrate consumption.

Raw Materials (北京同美 subsidiaries)

  • Supply chain integration: subsidiary JinMei has begun refining high-purity indium, securing stable upstream supply. Demand for PBN crucibles made by Boyu is also rising alongside the InP expansion.

5. Longer-Term Outlook

  • Long-term AI infrastructure trend: management noted that customers have provided forecasts beyond 2030, indicating that optical buildouts are a multi-year cycle.

  • CPO (co-packaged optics): expected to bring another explosive inflection point in late 2027.

  • Capacity and margins:

    • The 2026 expansion mainly uses existing facilities (brownfield), with a budget of about $30M.

    • Doubling again in 2027 would require a new fab (greenfield), with a budget of about $100M-$150M.

    • The goal is to bring gross margin back above 35% as revenue scales and InP's share rises.

6. Q&A Highlights

  • Key issue (export permit variable): management acknowledged that the process at China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) is opaque, and that a few applications were recently returned with requests for "supplementary information." Management reads this as a positive sign that officials are reviewing rather than simply rejecting.

  • Key issue (expansion scale): utilization is extremely high; the doubling plan uses Q4 capacity as the baseline. The target quarterly capacity value by end-2026 is up to $35M.

  • Key issue (customer structure): unlike in the past, capacity commitments are now being negotiated directly with customers' CEOs/GMs, a sign of an extremely tight supply side.

7. Risks and Watch Items

  • Export permits (the gatekeeper): revenue and profit depend entirely on the pace of permit approvals, which is highly uncertain.

  • Geopolitics: although 北京同美 is treated as a Chinese company, US-China relations could still disrupt the resilience of the global optical communications supply chain.

  • 6-inch transition yield: 6-inch InP is still in early development and may briefly dilute gross margin at first.

8. Bottom Line

  • In one sentence: AXT is on the eve of an inflection where "orders are booming but shipments are blocked".

  • Core moat: vertically integrated raw material supply (indium, PBN crucibles) and scarce high-volume InP substrate capacity.

  • Investment takeaway: strong multi-engine AI growth momentum (EML, SiPh, CPO). Export restrictions are delaying revenue recognition, but the $60M+ backlog and the plan to double capacity in 2026 underscore AXT's critical position in AI optical materials. As the permit process normalizes, the valuation has substantial room to re-rate upward.
