Earnings Highlights: Ciena (CIEN) | FY26 Q1

1. Summary | Ciena's AI networking demand explodes, backlog hits a record $7B

Ciena delivered an exceptionally strong FY26 Q1, with revenue of $1,430M (+33% YoY), a quarterly record. Management significantly raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth guidance to 28% (from 24%), driven by a flood of demand for AI-driven Scale Across (cross-data-center training) architectures and strong build-outs of MOFN (managed optical fiber networks) in emerging markets such as India. Backlog surged by $2B this quarter to $7B, with most orders already scheduled into FY2027. With its first-to-market 800G ZR, plus the Vesta (CPO) and Nitro (Redriver) technologies launched after acquiring Nubis, Ciena is transforming from a traditional WAN leader into a key supplier inside AI data centers (Inside-DC).

2. Financials (non-GAAP)

  • Revenue: $1,430M (+33% YoY, above the top of guidance).

  • Gross margin: 44.7% (+130 bps YoY, helped by a better product mix and higher capacity utilization).

  • Operating margin: 17.9% (190 bps above the guidance midpoint).

  • EPS: $1.35 (vs. $0.66 a year ago, more than doubled).

  • Opex: operating expenses held steady (roughly $375M–$390M), showing strong operating leverage.

  • Cash and CapEx: * Operating cash flow: $228M.

    • CapEx: $74M (2–3x the average of the past 12 quarters, mainly to accelerate capacity expansion).

  • Segment performance:

    • Optical Revenue: +40% YoY.

    • Waveserver & RLS: both product lines posted explosive quarterly revenue growth of +80% YoY.

3. Outlook (FY26 Q2 / full year)

  • FY26 Q2 guidance:

    • Revenue: $1,500M ± $50M.

    • Gross margin: 43.5%–44.5%.

    • Operating margin: 17.5%–18.5%.

  • FY26 full-year revision:

    • Revenue growth: raised to 28% ($5.9B–$6.3B).

    • Gross margin: raised to 43.5%–44.5%.

  • Growth drivers: early adoption of 800G ZR pluggable optics by hyperscalers, and service providers' catch-up investment in optical transport infrastructure.

4. Product updates

  • WAN / Optical Systems (traditional strength):

    • RLS system: record shipments for two consecutive quarters; it has become the line-system standard for cloud providers.

    • HyperRail: a next-generation high-density fiber solution developed for AI clusters that can sharply cut amplifier hut costs; standardization expected in 2026 and volume production in 2027.

  • Interconnect / Pluggables:

    • 800G ZR/ZR+: Ciena is first to market and expects related FY2026 revenue to triple year over year.

  • Inside-DC / CPO (new growth curve):

    • Vesta 206.4T: the industry's first high-density, low-power CPO solution; samples available in calendar Q2 2026.

    • Nitro Linear Redriver: targets the active copper cable (ACC) market with 80% lower power than AEC; samples also in Q2 2026.

  • DCOM (Data Center Out-of-band Management):

    • Following deep collaboration with Meta, it has now expanded into technical integration with two more global hyperscalers.

5. Looking ahead

  • The Scale Across trend: as individual data centers hit power limits, AI training is being distributed across campuses or regions, driving demand for high-performance, low-latency DCI (data center interconnect). Ciena's RLS and 800G ZR solutions benefit directly.

  • Structural margin improvement: although component costs (e.g., memory) are rising, Ciena has offset the pressure through vertical integration with suppliers and higher 800G ASPs.

  • MOFN and emerging markets: India orders rose 40% YoY, reflecting global service providers restarting optical infrastructure investment that had been deferred for five years, to handle AI traffic.

6. Q&A highlights

  • Key question: is there a risk of double booking in the backlog?

    • Management: this demand is driven mainly by AI training and inference infrastructure; engagement with hyperscalers is deep (including installation services, +42% YoY), giving the company very high visibility. Most new orders are for FY2027 deployments, and their quality is solid.

  • Key question: what is the competitive landscape for 800G pluggable optics?

    • Management: Ciena was not first to market in the 400G generation, but has seized the lead in the 800G generation. It has already been adopted by three hyperscale cloud customers for distributed (cross-site) training.

  • Key question: what are the levers for gross margin expansion?

    • Management: three levers — volume (scale effects), value exchange (repricing with each technology transition), and cost-down through engineering design. With price increases taking effect in the second half, gross margin will stabilize.

7. Risks and watch points

  • Supply-chain bottlenecks: supply from component vendors remains tight, limiting revenue recognition; demand still exceeds capacity.

  • Customer concentration: three customers each contributed more than 10% of revenue this quarter (two cloud, one telecom), so order-cut risk is relatively concentrated.

  • Capacity expansion timing: R&D and CapEx have risen sharply; if the capacity ramp-up falls short, it will affect conversion of 2027 orders.

8. Bottom line

  • Positioning in one line: Ciena is at the valuation re-rating sweet spot as it moves from "telecom transport leader" to "core of AI compute networking."

  • Core moat: the industry's strongest vertical integration (from DSP to systems), plus a time-to-market lead in 800G ZR technology.

  • Investment conclusion: with a backlog of $7B and new AI-driven Scale Across opportunities, Ciena's revenue growth and margin improvement over the next 6–8 quarters look very clear, and its Inside-DC products (CPO/Redriver) will provide a second growth engine in 2027, leaving room for further valuation upside.
