Earnings Call Highlights: Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) | FY26 Q1

1. Summary | AOI Capacity Comes Fully Online, 2026 Revenue Guidance Raised to $1.1B

AOI delivered an in-line FY26 Q1, setting a record revenue high for the fourth straight quarter. Benefiting from strong AI data center demand for 800G and a recovery in CATV 1.8GHz amplifiers, management formally raised 2026 full-year revenue guidance to more than $1.1B (from $1.0B) and expects non-GAAP operating income to exceed $140M. Growth hinges on large-scale capacity expansion in Texas and the vertical integration advantage of InP (indium phosphide) lasers; as new capacity comes online in the second half, revenue is set to grow non-linearly.

2. Financials (Non-GAAP)

  • Revenue: $151.1M (YoY +51%, QoQ +13%), a record high.

  • Gross margin: 29.2% (QoQ -220 bps, YoY -150 bps), mainly due to product mix changes and early ramp costs.

  • Operating result: operating loss of $7.3M.

  • EPS: -$0.07 (better than the low end of the guided range).

  • Expenses and spending:

    • Opex: $51.4M (34% of revenue).

    • CapEx: $68.7M (mainly for Texas capacity expansion).

    • Cash position: cash and short-term investments of about $449.4M at quarter end.

  • Segment revenue:

    • Data Center: $81.4M (54% of total), YoY +154%.

    • CATV: $66.8M (44% of total), YoY +4%.

3. Outlook (FY26 Q2 / Full Year)

  • Q2 guidance:

    • Revenue: $180M - $198M (significant YoY growth at the midpoint).

    • Gross margin: 29% - 30%.

    • EPS: -$0.03 to $0.03 (aiming for quarterly breakeven).

  • 2026 full-year revision:

    • Revenue outlook raised from $1.0B to >$1.1B.

    • From Q3, as capacity comes online, revenue is expected to jump sharply (estimated QoQ growth of 60%-80%).

4. Product Updates

  • Data Center (Transceivers):

    • 800G: Q1 revenue of $4.6M; first volume shipments to a hyperscale customer completed. Q2 shipments expected to grow 4x over Q1.

    • 1.6T: secured the first volume order from a long-standing major customer; sampling/shipments expected to begin in Q3, with rapid growth in 2027.

    • 400G: demand remains solid, with Q1 revenue up 10x YoY.

  • Laser Components (InP):

    • Vertical integration advantage: AOI's in-house InP lasers help it sidestep industry shortage risk.

    • Capacity expansion: laser capacity expected to rise 350% by end-2027, with wafer size moving from 4-inch to 6-inch.

  • CATV:

    • 1.8 GHz amplifiers: demand above expectations; full-year CATV revenue target raised to $325M.

  • CPO / ELSFP:

    • External light source (ELSFP) modules target CPO applications, with a 2027 capacity target of 400,000 units/month.

5. Looking Ahead

  • Texas capacity footprint: expanding to about 900,000 square feet across new Pearland and Houston facilities. The target is total 800G/1.6T capacity of 930,000 units/month by end-2027, with Texas accounting for more than 50%.

  • Profitability inflection: management targets gross margin recovering to 35% by year-end, and over the long term, as product mix improves (800G+ with in-house lasers), reaching 40%.

  • Automation platform: in-house automation equipment can switch quickly between 400G/800G/1.6T production, shortening equipment lead time and keeping yields stable.

6. Q&A Highlights

  • Capacity decoupled from revenue?: analysts asked why Q1 revenue was only $4.6M when 800G capacity had reached 100,000 units/month. Management responded that with a production cycle time of about 6-8 weeks plus customer audit time, capacity converts to revenue with a lag, and revenue will grow non-linearly from Q3.

  • 1.6T market positioning: the 1.6T orders are just an "appetizer"; 2027 will be the first year of large-scale 1.6T adoption in AI infrastructure, with a monthly revenue contribution target of $164M.

  • Competitors and contract manufacturing model: facing competition from contract manufacturers such as Fabrinet, management stressed that "Laser is Key". Laser supply in the market is extremely tight (Lumentum/Coherent running at full capacity), and owning an InP fab is AOI's core competitive advantage.

7. Risks and Watch Points

  • Ramp yield growing pains: early in the second-half volume ramp, if automation equipment tuning lags, short-term gross margin could be pressured.

  • Materials supply chain: although lasers are in-house, other materials such as substrates depend on suppliers (currently 4-5 non-Chinese suppliers) keeping pace with the capacity ramp.

  • Customer concentration: the top three customers contribute significantly (CATV 44%, DC 26% & 25%), so order swings at any single customer have a large impact.

8. Takeaways

  • Positioning in one sentence: AOI is at the capacity-ramp sweet spot of its transformation from a traditional optical module maker into a "key laser and module supplier for AI infrastructure."

  • Core moat: InP laser vertical integration + large-scale automated production lines localized in Texas, a strong advantage amid today's geopolitics and component shortages.

  • Investment conclusion: management unusually provided a 2027 mid-term target (DC revenue of $471M/month), signaling very high order visibility. Short-term gross margin is pressured by the ramp, but as the 800G share and in-house laser content rise, 2H26 should bring the twin drivers of EPS turning positive and a valuation re-rating.
