Lumentum Makes Waves at OFC 2026: NVIDIA's $2 Billion Investment Lands, Capacity Surges, and a New Era for AI Optical Networking
1. Capital and Strategy: NVIDIA's $2 Billion Vote of Confidence
Lumentum announced a $2 billion strategic investment from NVIDIA. The funding instantly strengthens Lumentum's balance sheet, removing debt pressure and providing serious firepower for the capacity expansion ahead.
Capacity pre-sold: NVIDIA has taken almost all of Lumentum's ultra-high-power (UHP) laser capacity.
Strategic significance: this is more than a cash injection — it confirms Lumentum's formal entry into the core supply chain of AI infrastructure.
2. Capacity Expansion: Clear Leadership in Indium Phosphide (InP)
Lumentum CEO Michael Hurleston stressed that indium phosphide (InP) capacity is currently a scarce resource for the industry.
Acquiring the Greensboro fab: Lumentum announced the acquisition of the Greensboro fab in North Carolina (a former Qorvo facility), which will become its fifth InP fab.
Capacity multiplied: since fiscal 2023, its EML (electro-absorption modulated laser) output has grown 8x, and InP output is expected to grow another 50% by the end of 2026.
Global footprint: capacity is currently concentrated in San Jose, Caswell (UK) and Takao (Japan), with Greensboro joining production in 2028.
3. Technology Breakthroughs: Moving Beyond Copper as Optics Replace It
CTO WuPen Yuen noted that once per-lane rates reach 400G, traditional copper cables (DAC) will face severe challenges, opening the door for optical solutions.
Key Product Highlights:
World's first 400G EML demo: at OFC, Lumentum demonstrated 400G-per-lane EML technology, the foundation for future 3.2T optical modules.
OCS (optical circuit switch): Lumentum signed a new multi-year, multi-billion-dollar OCS agreement. OCS offers ultra-low latency (nanosecond-scale) and very low power consumption (less than 1/10 of an electrical switch).
1.6T modules: shipments of 1.6T optical modules are expected to begin this summer, with vertical integration of in-house lasers to lift gross margin.
4. Financial Targets: A Roadmap to $2 Billion in Quarterly Revenue
CFO Wajid Ali confidently laid out the company's medium-term growth targets:
Metric | Near-term target (9–12 months) | Medium-term target (18–24 months) |
Quarterly revenue | $1.25 billion | $2 billion |
Operating margin (non-GAAP) | About 35% | 40% |
