Speaker: Dr. 洪誌銘

AVP of Technology, MediaTek

Topic: Challenges and Opportunities to Illuminate the AI World with Silicon Photonics

Event: SEMICON Taiwan 2024 Silicon Photonics International Forum

Date: 2024-09-03

  • AI applications' demand for high-speed data transmission:

    • 洪誌銘 stressed that as AI applications grow rapidly, data centers' demand for high-speed data transmission is surging, driving the rapid replacement of traditional cabling with optical communication technology.

  • Challenges and opportunities for silicon photonics:

    • Although silicon photonics offers a huge opportunity to solve high-speed data transmission for data centers and AI applications, the talk noted that the technology still faces multiple challenges on the way to mass adoption, including production cost, thermal management, and compatibility with existing technologies.

    • He also noted that with the 19th IEEE standards update, higher transmission rates open up further room for silicon photonics to grow.

  • Optical communication vs copper cables:

    • 洪誌銘 pointed out that compared with copper cables, optical communication delivers higher transmission speeds and lower power consumption, which is especially important for big-data processing in AI applications.

  • Technology outlook:

    • Finally, 洪誌銘 looked ahead to the potential of silicon photonics, describing it as a key technology for AI-driven data centers and other applications, and called on the industry to accelerate R&D and standardization to meet future market demand.
