CPO Capacity Goes 15x, but the Buyers Are the Most Cash-Strapped: NVIDIA Prepays the Back End, and China A-Shares Priced In a 2029 Split | STT Weekly 2026 W43
Free Section
Compared with our Sept 28 piece "CPO's real bottleneck isn't packaging yield, it's test" (in Chinese), what is new this time is that NVIDIA itself put numbers on capacity, and locked them in with cash.
First, at GTC Berlin on Oct 21, NVIDIA announced capacity expansions with six supply-chain partners: SPIL's CPO optical-engine capacity reaches 15x today's level by mid-2027 and doubles again by end-2028; KYEC received a $1.1B capacity reservation advance to build a US test site, with high-volume production in April 2027; substrate capacity grows 2.5x over three years, and total test capacity doubles in 2027. Jensen Huang: "Capacity is the constraint."
Second, no mainland China vendor is on the expansion list. On Oct 22, Innolight closed down 8.76%, about 57% below its June high.
Third, the same day Huang said neocloud demand is off the charts, but their funding needs far exceed supply; CoreWeave fell to a 17-month low.
STT's view: what NVIDIA locked up with prepayments is the back end (packaging, substrates and test). 15x is a capacity ceiling, not demand. What the A-share selloff priced in is a split that only happens after CPO ramps in 2029.
