TSMC Puts the Bottleneck Somewhere Other Than Itself: CPO's Decisive Battle Shifts Down to Coupling and Test — 2026 W36 Industry Weekly

4 min read
  • At SEMICON Taiwan, TSMC stated that silicon photonics (SiPh) penetration will exceed 50% in 2027 and that co-packaged optics (CPO) will enter volume production in the second half of this year, and it named seven bottleneck links: laser sources, optical fiber, connectors, photodetectors, packaging, optical coupling, and test.

  • On the demand side, the same week delivered three mutually reinforcing data points: Broadcom AI semiconductor revenue of $16.7 billion for the quarter (YoY +221%), direct cloud customers at 53% of Ciena's revenue, and Wiwynn's August revenue up 198% YoY.

  • But this week's hardest evidence was not in any earnings call: HIWIN's lead time for silicon photonics inspection equipment has stretched to 6 months, and Chieftek's CPO-related orders are up nearly 30x versus all of last year.

1. Three Sets of Numbers on the Same Table This Week

This week's information density lies not in any single event, but in three independent data sets — from demand, technology, and equipment — pointing to the same conclusion.

Demand side: Broadcom lays out a three-year roadmap. Q3 FY26 revenue was $29.591 billion, YoY +86%, with semiconductor solutions rising to 70% of the mix (57% a year earlier). AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion for the quarter, YoY +221% and QoQ +54%; Q4 guidance is $21.7 billion (YoY +236%), and management explicitly cited visibility to $115 billion in FY27 and $230 billion in FY28. Total Q4 revenue guidance of $34.8 billion came in slightly below market expectations, and the stock fell more than 3% after hours. (Sources: Broadcom IR, CNBC, 09/02. For the full breakdown, see Earnings Highlights: Broadcom (AVGO) | Q3 FY2026)

Demand side, second proof: cloud takes over Ciena's customer base. FQ3 FY26 revenue hit a record $1.67 billion, YoY +37%, and adjusted operating margin reached an all-time high of 22.5%. Revenue from direct cloud customers grew 82% YoY to 53% of total revenue (42% in FQ4 2025). Backlog rose $800 million QoQ to $8.5 billion, with an FY26 target above $10 billion; FY26 revenue guidance was raised to $6.42 billion (YoY +35%). (Source: Ciena IR, 09/03)

Technology side: TSMC gives both a timeline and a bottleneck list. At the SEMICON Taiwan Silicon Photonics Forum on 8/31, 徐國晉, Vice President of Advanced Packaging Technology Development, said silicon photonics penetration will exceed 50% in 2027 and CPO will enter volume production in the second half of this year; global optical transceiver sales grew 25% YoY in 2025 and are expected to grow another 50% in 2026. In the same session he named CPO bottlenecks spanning laser sources, optical fiber, fiber connectors, photodetectors, packaging, optical coupling, and test, stressing that competition has shifted from single chips to full ecosystem integration. Equipment side: lead times and reorder multiples. HIWIN's silicon photonics inspection equipment orders have surged since Q3, with two rounds of follow-on orders from international customers totaling several hundred units; lead times have stretched to 6 months, and the company expects to be fully loaded through Q1 2027. Chieftek (1597) won orders for several thousand sets from a major international CPO equipment maker, up nearly 30x versus all of last year; Marketech International's backlog visibility extends to 2028. Taiwanese revenue side. Foxconn's August revenue was NT$921.766 billion, YoY +51.98%; Wiwynn posted NT$96 billion, YoY +198%, explicitly attributed to ASIC AI servers; Wistron posted NT$172.6 billion, a record for the period; LandMark Optoelectronics posted NT$520 million, YoY +180.9%, a monthly record. That concludes the key takeaways of this article.

STT's full interpretation — why TSMC placed the bottleneck outside itself, which Taiwanese companies map to each of the seven links, why equipment makers' lead times are more honest than earnings calls, and the camp realignment behind NVIDIA's subscription to MediaTek's ECB — is fully analyzed in the premium section.

The full version also includes:

  • A "bottleneck link × matching Taiwanese supplier × progress verifiable this week" table (LandMark Optoelectronics, FOCI, ShunSin Technology, Largan, HIWIN, Chieftek)

  • Why the numbers to remember this week are not $230 billion, but 6 months and 30x

  • Four counterarguments: duplicate equipment orders, strategic messaging, an undefined penetration metric, and a shared upstream behind the demand signals

  • Three concrete indicators to track over the next three months
