This week the market read SemiAnalysis's CPO-delay report as a death knell for optical components. It read it backwards. If CPO ramps a year later, pluggable optical modules — and the upstream EML lasers already sold out through 2027 — get an extra year of earnings. Demand hasn't weakened; only the oversold share prices have.

Pluggable optics are hitting the front-panel limit, not a speed limit. Andy Bechtolsheim sandwiches a cold plate between two paddle cards to shrink 102.4T from 4U to 1U. His only doubt about CPO is attach yield, not the physics, and a Foxconn connector now sampling decides whether XPO works at 400G/lane.

Pluggable optics aren't hitting a speed wall — they're hitting a power and density wall. CPO moves electrical-to-optical conversion right next to the ASIC to win back power and density, and it starts in scale-up, where copper can no longer cope, rather than replacing pluggables.
