OCP Global Summit 2/6 | NPO Lock-in Sits in the Board, Not the Optical Engine

OCP Global Summit paid series 2/6: the interface war — footprints, sockets and replaceable units, who sets the standard and who captures the value

Free section

Part 1/6, "NPO Wins Purchasing Power, Not Shipment Volume", argued that buyers want to be able to switch suppliers. This piece asks the next question: can the optical engine actually be swapped out?

At ECOC 2026, Ciena had already pitched Open CPX as an MSA in which optics and copper share the same socket; see ECOC 2026 | Ciena Uses Open CPX to Turn the 6.4T Optical Engine Back into a Shelf Part. A month later at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, the people talking about it were speakers who do not sell optical engines.

First, Molex barely talked about optics and focused on the board: Gemini Mezz uses a single 100-differential-pair pinout to cover both 6.4T and 7.2T, and CuOperate lets the same footprint take either an optical module or a copper cable.

Second, Samtec holds the Open CPX socket-plus-connector loss under 1 dB, cutting the host channel from about 32 dB for a front-panel pluggable to 15 dB.

Third, Dell did not give a single pJ/bit figure; it only asked how big a part has to be replaced when a link fails.

STT's view: NPO lock-in sits in the board and its interfaces, not in the optical engine.

In the paid section

  • Four lock-in layers: dimensions and freeze points of the footprint, socket, module form factor and fiber interface

  • Loss-budget breakdown: why the socket may take only 1 dB, and how module pairing affects BER

  • Replaceable-unit breakdown: how big a part you replace, and what each extra separable interface costs in dB and yield

  • Who sets the standard, who captures the value: a map of eight standard vehicles and the suppliers named on stage

  • Testimony from the other side: which interfaces the CPO camp itself is standardizing

  • Differences from our ECOC calls: one revision and two reinforcements, including a tension with the 1/6 conclusion

  • Taiwan supply chain: Taiwanese names on the slides and the two real bottlenecks

  • Counterarguments and seven signals to watch

That is the summary of this piece.

STT's full analysis — what each of NPO's four interface layers locks in, who sets the standard, who captures the value, and three differences from our ECOC series — is in the paid section, with 6 original charts.
