CPO Lasers Don't Have to Chase 400 mW: NPO With Built-In Lasers Brings the Bar Back to Taiwan's Home Turf
The standard answer for a CPO light source is the external laser ELSFP: 200 mW out of the module, 300–400 mW required at the chip, and only a handful of companies such as Lumentum and Coherent can make it in volume.
At ECOC 2026, Ryan Yu of TeraHop, a subsidiary of Innolight, demonstrated another path: putting the laser directly inside the NPO. Removing the front-panel ELSFP, the polarization-maintaining fiber, and a set of connectors cuts about 3 dB of loss from the optical path, so laser power can drop a notch. With an entire row of light-source slots gone from the front panel, the switch may even shed 1U.
At the same ECOC, Lumentum, which sells high-power lasers, spelled out the specs itself: CPO needs 25–26 dBm (about 316–400 mW), while NPO needs only 21–23 dBm (about 126–200 mW). A 3–4 dB difference in the bar produces a completely different list of who can supply, and the volume sweet spot of Taiwan’s CW laser chain (70–100 mW) sits right at the door of the NPO window.
