External Laser Sources Are No Longer a Stopgap: ECOC Drew the ELS Spec Line, and the Ticket Isn't 400 mW
For the past two years, when it came to CPO light sources, the market compared only one number: output power. 100 mW, 200 mW, 400 mW — the claims kept climbing. With the laser placed outside the module (External Laser Source, ELS) and light delivered to the silicon photonics engine via polarization-maintaining fiber, more power was always better, because one source has to feed many channels.
CIOE and ECOC in September 2026 pushed this into a new stage. At its booth, OIF ran a multi-vendor ELSFP interoperability demo headlined by a 1331 nm cooled UHP Class light source; the seven-part Open CTS / Open CPX specification led by Ciena was released less than six months after the group formed, accommodating both external and integrated light sources; Coherent used its own ELSFP to drive two NPOs in a live demo, reporting 4.7 pJ/bit and stating explicitly that the figure includes the ELSFP itself. Even more important were the demand tiers Lumentum gave — NPO needs 21–23 dBm, CPO needs 25–26 dBm — and SCINTIL's item-by-item breakdown of the OIF / OCI ELS specs: >200 mW, wall-plug >10%, RIN far below −140 dB/Hz, linewidth around 1 MHz.
The significance is not technical but in the supply chain: once a component has a public interface spec, it turns from "a part inside one company's module" into an item that can be compared, second-sourced and kicked off the list. And the field it's compared on is no longer power.
